Asociación Kano Nete

Kano NeteKANO NETE — which means 'Structured Knowledge of the Universe' — is a non-profit organization founded in January 2014 on the initiative of a group of Shipibo men and women in Peruvian Amazonia. Our main objective is to carry out research with the full participation of indigenous people themselves regarding our knowledge, cultures, and languages; and to share the results of this work, especially within our own communities. Because several members of Kano Nete are bilingual schoolteachers, a central focus is to convey what we discover to our children through our schools, with the goal of maintaining and strengthening Amazonian cultures and identities.

In addition to schoolteachers, the founders of Kano Nete include specialists in the ceramic arts, in the treatment of mental and physical health through ayahuasca, in forest knowledge, and in linguistics.

Kano NeteProjects begun and carried out in 2014 include:

• The manufacture of ceramics and other preparatory activities for the celebration of the 100th Anniversary of the Native Community of San Francisco de Yarinacocha

• The production of the first part of a grammar of the shipibo-konibo language in that language

• A round-table discussion on Shipibo female puberty rituals, known as 'Ani Xeati', which were carried out until the 1970s. This event included the participation of Isá Rate and Ranin Ama, both members of Kano Nete who themselves witnessed the 'Ani Xeati' ceremony.
